A wish for calm days and good fortune, without end.

The pattern is named for Seigaiha, an old gagaku court dance whose dancers wore robes drawn with these waves. Arcs are stacked like scales, each wave half hidden by the next, so the pattern can go on as far as the cloth allows. It has long been said to carry a wish for peaceful days that keep coming, like waves reaching the shore.
