Folding fans opened wide, and the shapes of shells. Gold, navy, red and blue sit side by side, the ground pattern changing from one to the next. The fan is suehiro, 'widening at the end', and in that opening shape people have wished for a future that grows brighter as it goes.
It began as an obi, worn to someone's celebrations and kept, then begun again by hand. For someone whose road is just opening out.
